After receiving several requests recently for information on how we added the lighting to Luke’s accent wall in his bedroom (from my earlier post on Accent Walls), I wanted to put out a post on an easy way to add accent lighting.
Lighting can elevate a space and add a fun focal point to a room. Obviously accent lighting can be added by doing some electrical work – which we have done our fair share of when we finished out basement. We have, however, easily added accent lighting to several areas of our home using these LED light strips from Amazon. These light strips are easy to use, install and a great option if you are trying to avoid getting into electrical work.
Included in the kit is the LED light strip, remote, and power adapter. There’s also an App that can be downloaded to control the lights instead of using the remote.
The best thing about these lights is the easy installation with the self-adhesive tape. We installed Luke’s lights over two years ago and have not run into any issue with the lights lifting away from the shelf.
When installing, you can easily customize the light strip to the correct length as it can be cut to size. Throughout the strip are marks where you can safely cut without affecting performance. The lights also come in different lengths, but if needed you can also use a connector to extend the length. This is something we have not had to do though.
Some of the highlights that I liked about these was you can use the remote that comes with the lights or download and use an App to control them. When using the remote you do have to be fairly close to the lights and point at the receiver. This is typically not an issue for us since when we are using the lights, we are near them. If this wasn’t the case, this is where the App that uses Bluetooth would come in handy.Â
Both the remote and the App offer several different light color options and light settings. A setting is included to sync the lights to music or sound as well. I will have to say that we are pretty boring when it comes to using the lights because we typically just leave them set on one color.
We currently have 4 strips of accent lights in our home.
We don’t use the lights every day, but they are nice to have when we are enjoying the space. They add a fun, unique element to the rooms.Â
Next up, we are adding accent lighting under our kitchen cabinets (that we recently painted – check out my previous post). These we are planning on hard wiring so that they can be turned on with a switch. I’ll create a new post with the steps we took to do this once we decide we are ready to tackle our next project!
Let me know in the Comments if you have added any accent lighting to your home – I’d love to see your inspiration pictures!
