Cookie Monster 1st Birthday Theme

This is going a little back in time, but a friend of mine was recently looking for 1st Birthday party ideas. I figured it would be a perfect time to create this post.

I had so much fun planning Luke’s first birthday using a Cookie Monster theme. It ended up being my first attempt at a balloon arch, and my first and only attempt at a cookie monster rug! From this party on, cookies have been my son’s favorite treat.

As you scroll through, hopefully you’ll find some inspiration.

The method I used to create the balloon arch was the chicken wire method. I followed a YouTube video on how to create this, if I ever do another one, I’ll make sure to create a how-to video. It was time consuming, but I can’t say it was a lot worse than the other methods I’ve used for a balloon arch. My biggest mistake was not investing in a balloon pump until just a few months ago.

I found the cutest highchair banner off Etsy, unfortunately it looks like the store has closed. Here you can find a similar one that has good reviews.

I made the cookie monster rug by buying some blue fur fabric and outlined the body by hand. To elevate the head a little bit, I used a piece of foam glued to the underside. The eyes were made out of white yarn looped around into a ball, secured the end with some glue and then glued on a circular piece of black felt. The cookie pillow was made from two round pieces of tan fabric with some brown felt for the chocolate chips. For ease, I used fabric glue to connect the two round pieces and stuffed it with some cotton. I do not sew, never have and probably never will…I do wish I could though!

A few other things I added for the final touch:

  • I had extra fur fabric, so I bought some wood letters from Hobby Lobby and glued it to them.
  • I used a banner from Etsy to hang a picture from each month of Luke’s first year – such a cute idea to see how your little one has grown over the year.
  • His smash cake and cupcakes were from a local bakery.
  • For the adults we made a fun blue Cookie Monster drink.
  • I decorated with few little Cookie Monster stuffed animals.
  • I also have been using the same Birthday sign from Amazon for each Birthday. I fill it out each year with chalk markers and put it in a frame.

Leave a comment to tell me if you used a theme for your little one’s 1st Birthday!
