If you’re looking for some accent wall inspiration, you have come to the right place. Accent walls can be a simple way to upgrade the look of a room and give your house a custom feel.
We have added several accent walls to our own home, with varying degrees of complexity to build.
My son’s room was the first that we decided to add an accent wall to. While setting up his nursery we planned a nautical theme with beautiful dark blue walls (Sherwin Williams Distance – SW6243). To brighten the room and make the crib a focal point, we added a white accent wall. This wall was easily created with 1×4 trim boards attached directly to the drywall. For more dimension, we only took the boards three-quarters of the way up the wall and created a shelf at the stopping point. A 1×4 trim board and crown molding were used to create the shelf, with a 2×4 underneath for support.

My husband loves accent lighting and so naturally we recently added the lighting on top of the shelf. We used an LED strip light from Amazon. My son loves being able to change the color of the lights and anything that helps him want to be in his room at bedtime is a win for me.

This accent wall was one of the easiest to build – at least for me since I was pregnant at the time, so I got to just oversee my husband’s work.
We loved his accent wall so much that we recreated versions of it on our stairway landing and entryway.
Our stairway landing already had a shelf built in with the drywall. We again used 1×4 trim boards but created the grid pattern on the entire accent wall. A 1×8 board was used on top to finish the shelf. My favorite part is decorating above the wall.

The entryway wall was added last year and completed in just a few short days – the longest part was waiting for the paint to dry between coats.
In our primary bedroom we added more texture to the wall by first adding beadboard. The panels were installed first, then added 1×4 trim boards evenly spaced on top. The same technique that was used in my son’s room was used here to create the small shelf on top.
We loved how this looked in our bedroom and added the same beadboard when we remodeled our bathroom.
Last, but certainly not least – our gorgeous curved stone wall.
This wall is in our basement and the first thing you see walking into the room. The curve was my husband’s idea and initially I thought he was crazy. We were working on finishing our basement at the time and were still trying to figure out how to put in straight walls. His idea was to help draw people around into the room with the curve of this wall. This definitely took some work to create, but if you’re up for a challenge it’s a beautiful statement wall!
